The Alloy Sensor MB measures the thermal voltage developed when metals are electrically connected in a circuit with one hot and one cold junction. The virtual thermocouple, with joint temperatures automatically held, produces a different millivoltage based on the alloy tested and referenced to the hot post alloy.
Parts must be clean and conductive. Trace minor elements and heat treat variations influence the reading and may be the very factor being studied. There are two sensitivity ranges, one for major alloy variations and one for minor.
There is a one mimute initial heatup time for the one second alloy tests. An integrated balance control (rarely used) and initial self-regulation provide very simple operation.
Nicad batteries provide 5 hours of operation with a 12 hour recharge (120 volt, 60 Hz, at 6 watts).
