C1 "Spider" ScanTech Instruments' remote tank and vessel scanner.

The C1 "Spider" can be purchased separately or as an integrated System with cables, water supply etc.. Armed with a complete Spider system and the Analyst software package you have an extraordinary tank and vessel scanning capability.

The C1 "Spider" has the capability of breaking over to conform to a radius. This allows the surface of the wheels to maintain contact with the vessel being inspected.

The Spider will access areas with very little clearance, which may make other methods impossible. The remote method is far safer in most cases, especially on areas such as tank roofs which may contain little remaining wall thickness.

The Spider attaches to tanks or vessel wall using high-strength rare-earth magnetic wheels. The wheels of the scanner are much larger in diameter than other designs, which is imperative in traversing obstructions such as those found on storage tanks. Other prerequisites for dependable operation under these conditions are at least four driven wheels, a flexible suspension, high torque, and the ability to maneuver the vehicle. The scanner has four wheel drive and a very large suspension travel. It also utilizes rare-earth permanent magnet motors which provide the highest torque-to-weight ratio available. Speed reduction and torque multiplication is accomplished using superior planetary gearheads. Coupling this high torque to the wheels can be difficult using small, light components as required on a remote scanner, but all components in the drive-train have been designed for strenuous service to eliminate these problems. The timing belts which couple the motor shaft to the wheels are capable of handling high torque, but are lighter and require less maintenance than metal chains. Belt tension is easily adjusted if required. The use of two motors simplifies steering, which is controlled using a small industrial-type joystick.

This high quality does not end with the drive-train. All materials used in the scanner construction are high-performance, lightweight, engineering materials, These include the highest-strength aluminum alloy and composite materials, and high-tech plastics with other favorable properties. The cable connectors are sealed, high quality, and miniature with lightweight metal construction. These items contribute to the low weight of the unit at 11 LB Environmental sealing extends to the motors and all electrical cabling. The motors are sealed lightweight enclosures, and all conductor cabling and enclosures are sealed.

The Spider can be modified to carry a variety of transducer configuration. A bubble-type is setup standard. The bubbler is mounted on a two-piece double-gimbaled fixture which allows the bubbler to remain flat on the vessel wall. Water is used as a couplant, and is pumped to the bubbler from the included pump and reservoir unit. The use of water path between the transducer and part surface allows the use of "echo-to-echo" or "interface" gating. This eliminates measurement "zero" error which can derive from even slight movement of the transducer away from the surface (which will happen on a surface that is less than perfect). The set water-path distance allows for the measurement of up to 3 inches (76 mm) of steel, but can be modified for thicker materials.

An optical encoder can optionally be used for distance measurements, and the encoder and peripherals have been designed to be used as an integral part of the scanner. The encoder is housed in a lightweight, sealed enclosure and is driven by a fraction drive wheel. This encoder can be interface to existing data acquisition software, etc.

A sheathed, 100 ft (30M) cable bundle contains an RG58 coax for the ultrasonic signal, vinyl tubing for the water couplant, and the motor control and encoder conductors. At the scanner end, the connections are made to bulkhead connectors, which include a miniature, stainless steel quick-connect for water supply.
